Whitley County's fire protection is provided by 9 Volunteer area Fire Departments with approximately 125 volunteer fire fighters serving the county.

The Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1972 and was the first volunteer department established in the county and organized by members of the community. The department serves 7000 people covering a 90 square mile area with a current ISO rating of class nine.
Serving the second largest population in Whitley County, with 40 dedicated fire fighters that respond to a combination of structure, forest and vehicle fires, auto extrication and assisting in rescue operations and hazardous materials logging 100 to 125 various incidents per year. The department performs cause and origin to determine fire trends; future fire prevention and special fire related problems. They assist in arson related cases to aid in the investigation, arrest and prosecution of an arsonist.

AFFILIATIONS: Kentucky Firefighters Associations, South Eastern Kentucky Firefighters Association, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), Whitley County Sheriff's Department arson Unit, Kentucky State Police Professional Association and the Kentucky Association of Fire Chief's.

The Patterson Creek Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1986 by a group of concerned citizens in the community. After a fire related fatality occurred, this death inspired members of our community to organize a fire department.
The department was formed with one pumper apparatus, which held 300 gallons; there were approximately 5 initial members of men and women who communicated via the telephone for responding to emergencies.
Through many years of hard work, dedications and the people of our community and surrounding area support, we now have a fire department that we and our community are proud of, and area governed by a Board of Directors who make our funds wisely spent.
Rockholds VFD
The Rockholds Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1982 by a group of concerned citizens in the community.
The department currently has two apparatus one pumper and one tanker apparatus, there are approximately 14 active fire fighters consisting of men and women who provide fire protection services to a community of 1500 persons.

City of Corbin Fire Department
The first law enforcement position in the City of Corbin was the appointment of a Town Marshall in 1904. By City Ordinance in 1950, in compliance to Legislation to organize the current Police Department was formed. Currently staffed with 21 sworn officers and 7 civilians, respond to over 13,000 calls per year within the boundaries Whitley County and Knox County.
