Student Services

Extended School Services (ESS)

Extended School Services provide additional academic services to students outside normal school hours. ESS provides free tutoring in basic subjects twice a week at all grade levels. The services are offered after school. Students are provided a snack and transportation in addition to the individualized tutoring needed to master skills necessary to progress in their academic work. Students are referred to the program by teachers or parents. Certified teachers work with small groups to provide assistance in many areas such as studying for a test or doing homework or learning a new concept or skill. Extended School Services also includes summer instructional programs to help students makeup work they have fallen behind in or repeat courses they have failed. Programs vary in length based on grade level.

South-Central Family Resource Center

South Elementary is served by a family resource center. The center was established by the Kentucky Education Reform Act and exist to remove any barriers that keep a child from getting an education. The family resource center offers a variety of programs including child care, after-school care, recreation programs, food and clothing programs for needy families, referrals to numerous local agencies, counseling services, health services and community education opportunities. Through these and other services, the center attempts to identify potential problems faced by students outside the classroom that might be affecting schoolwork and find solutions to those issues.

Parent Resource Center

This office works with the Family Resource Center and the principals at each school to encourage parent involvement in the district. The coordinator conducts Understanding Special Education sessions for parents of preschoolers to introduce them to resources available for area children. Also the coordinator organizes a clothes closet to help families in time of need. Parent volunteers are used at all of the schools for a variety of services and their efforts are often coordinated through this office. Also additional resources are made available to parents on a variety of topics to improve parenting skills.

Student Assistance Program

Often students need someone to talk with about problems concerning drug or alcohol abuse or with family members or other relationships. This program provides a trained counselor to help students with their problems or refer them to appropriate agencies for additional services. Also, Student Assistance coordinates drug/alcohol prevention efforts in the district and serves as sponsor for the Teen Leadership Council. Other programs include peer counseling, support groups and helping students make the transition back to school after being treated for substance abuse or other problems. The program's coordinator, based at the high school, works with teams at each school to identify students at risk and provide intervention services.

Service Learning

In conjunction with the AmeriCorps program, students in the Corbin City Schools are combining community service with classwork. An AmeriCorps volunteer works with the district each year coordinating units of instruction with projects and programs out in the community. Students have been involved with "Reading with the Redhounds", where CHS students tutor elementary students with guided reading instruction. Environment classes participate in recycling and other Earth Day projects. The purpose of the program is to teach students the subject as well as providing hands-on opportunities to practice what they have learned with the community benefitting from the lessons.

Food Services

The Food Service Department serves breakfast and lunch at all five schools in the district. Approximately 1,700 meals are served each day not including additional meals served to special programs such as day care, preschool and other contracted services. Food Service also has a community catering service which is used for banquets, weddings, receptions and other gatherings.
