Student Handbook
Our Motto
"Rooted in responsibility, with wings of independence."
Mission Statement
South Elementary believes that all students can achieve mastery of basic skills, regardless of family background, socio-economic status, race or gender.
We believe our school's purpose is to educate all students to achieve high levels of academic performance while fostering growth, both socially and emotionally; thus enabling all students to achieve mastery of skills necessary to become effective and productive members of society.
Therefore, public education involves everyone. The home, the school, the community are more involved in one common cause-educating the whole child.
Arrival:
Students are to report to the lunchroom or gym each morning. They will be dismissed to their classrooms at 7:40 a.m.
Attendance:
Students need to be on time. If the student is absent, a note explaining the absence must be brought to the teacher on the day the student returns to school. Students should be at school every day so they can receive the best educational experience possible. A telephone call to the school office letting us know that your child will be absent for the day is expected (528-1651).
Student absences are excused for visits to the doctor, illness, or death in the family. Three (3) unexcused absences or excessive tardies will be investigated.
Any time a child is signed out between 7:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., they will be counted tardy. If a child is away from school for more than two (2) hours and six (6) minutes, they will be counted absent for a half (1/2) day and not tardy. These absences and tardies will appear on the progress report and permanent record. The Kentucky Department of Education will be auditing our student sign-in/out book to ensure that we are following the new rules.
Bus
Transportation
Encourage your child to behave properly on the school bus: stay in seat: keep hands and arms inside bus (not out the window): talk only to the person next to him/her, not someone in front or behind. Each year, we have a difficult time with student behavior; so we are appealing to you as parents to help us as much as possible. Students who misbehave could have bus privileges taken away.
Cafeteria
Information
Breakfast is served each morning from 7:15 -7:40 a.m. The price of a student breakfast is $.60 ($.30 for reduced breakfast). If your child is going to eat breakfast at school, he/she should be in the cafeteria before 7:30 a.m.
Lunch is provided in the cafeteria daily. Each student has a 25 minute lunch period. Please teach your child to be responsible for bringing his/her lunch or lunch money. If lunch is brought from home, milk or juice may be purchased. A student lunch costs $1.40 ($.40 for reduced lunch).
Cafeteria Rules:
Enter and exit the
cafeteria in a quiet, orderly manner
Talk quietly with
your neighbors
Use good table
manners
Leave your area
clean
Raise you hand if you need something
Stay seated until
dismissed.
Conferences
Parents are required to attend conferences so they will better understand their child's progress in their instructional program. If parents would like to schedule a conference with their child's teacher, they may call the school office.
Detention after school and/or Saturday Detention
After-school detention can only be assigned by the principal. Parents/guardians are to be notified at least one school day before the scheduled time of detention. This allows time for parents/guardians to see that the student has transportation home at the prescribed time, or to notify the principal in writing if they are unable to do so.
Discipline
South Elementary School strives to teach students to be responsible for their own behavior and to develop respect for themselves, fellow students, and the staff.
The purpose of our discipline policy is to ensure the rights of each student to attend school in a safe, positive, and productive learning environment.

Early Arrival of Students
In some instances, it is necessary to admit students to the building prior to 7:00 a.m. The office must have a letter from the parent stating the reason for the student to arrive early. Remember that teachers are not on duty prior to 7:30 a.m. Early arrivals will sit in the cafeteria or gym.
Entrances
To insure the safety of our students, all entrances to the building will be locked from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each school day. Anyone entering the building during school hours must enter through the main doors in the front of the building. (All doors open from the inside in the event of an emergency.)
Illness at
School
If your child becomes ill and cannot remain at school, you will be notified immediately. Emergencies will be taken care of by the school nurse or other school personnel until a parent or guardian arrives. School employees will not transport your child nor will a sick child be allowed to walk home. A telephone number where you can be reached must be on file in the school office.
Lice Policy
Upon discovery of head lice on any child within a classroom, all children within that classroom shall be checked for head lice. The infected student's parents will be notified and the child will not be allowed to return to school until he/she has been treated for lice. In addition, a note shall be sent home with each child in the classroom where the head lice have been discovered.
Corbin Independent Schools have a zero (0) nit policy where lice is concerned. What this means is that you can treat your child's head, you can spend hours getting the nits out, but if the child returns to school with any nits, dead or alive, he/she may not return to class and will be sent home.
